Japan is one of the world's leading forest countries

There are approximately 25.05 million hectares of forests in Japan, of which approximately 13.48 million hectares (approximately 50%) are natural forests, 10.2 million hectares (approximately 40%) are artificial forests, and the remainder is treeless land, bamboo forests, etc. The forest area of the country is approximately 66% (the forest rate is approximately 70%), making it one of the most forested countries among developed countries.

66% (about two-thirds) of Japan's land is forest
The land area of Japan is 37.8 million hectares, and the forest area is 25.05 million hectares, so approximately two-thirds (66%) of Japan's land area is forest.

Japan is one of the world's most forested countries
The forest area relative to the national land area is called the forest ratio. According to data released by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Japan's forest coverage rate is 68.5% (*1). In other words, 70% of the country is forest. Japan's forest coverage rate ranks second among developed countries (OECD countries) (*2) after Finland. It can be said to be one of the most forested countries in the world. By the way, the average forest coverage rate in the world is about 31%.
Japan is often said to be a country lacking in natural resources, but forest resources are not in short supply; in fact, they are not being used.

日本は世界有数の森林大国

日本の森林は約2,505万haあり、そのうち約1,348万ha（約5割）が天然林、1,020万ha（約4割）が人工林、残りが無立木地、竹林などです。国土面積に占める森林面積は約66％（森林率約7割）で、先進国の中では有数の森林大国です。

日本の国土の66％（約3分の2）は森林
日本の国土面積は3,780万ha、森林面積は2,505万haなので、日本の国土の約3分の2（66％）は森林となっています。

日本は世界有数の森林国
国土面積に占める森林面積を森林率といいます。国連食料農業機関（FAO）が公表しているデータでは日本の森林率は68.5％（※1）。つまり国土の7割は森林ということになります。日本の森林率は先進国（OECD諸国）（※2）の中では、フィンランドに次いで第2位。世界でも有数の森林国といえます。ちなみに世界の森林率の平均は約31％です。
日本は資源のない国とよくいわれますが、森林資源については乏しいわけではなく、実は使われずにいるという現状もあります。
